Ar-NGNA [Arkansas Chapter]

Latest News

Ar-NGNA was established in 2010 to serve the needs of older adult in Arkansas, their caregivers and educators.

Carol Enderlin, Ph.D., R.N., a clinical assistant professor in the UAMS College of Nursing, was named as a National Gerontological Fellow Award for outstanding leadership in gerontological nursing and distinguished contributions to the field.

Enderlin is a nationally recognized researcher in several areas, including sleep. She received the John A. Hartford Pre-doctoral Fellowship in Geriatric Nursing in 2008. Enderlin’s research focus is sleep in older women with breast cancer, while also studying various sleep patterns and conditions in patients with multiple myeloma.

Joy Jennings, MSN, R.N., a clinical professor in the UAMS College of Nursing, recently received certification as an ANCC Gerontological Nurse.

Janet Rooker is pictured (center) with Arkansas Gerontological Society (AGS) Fellow Award she received at the 2013 annual spring conference, for her service to older adults in Arkansas. She is pictured between Melodee Harris (left), President and Carol Enderlin (R), Education Officer, of the Arkansas Chapter of NGNA (AR-NGNA). AR-NGNA collaborated with AGS in offering a two-day track of nursing-related presentations March 27 through 28, in the conference attended by over 200 persons in professions related to the field of aging from around the state. Presenters from AR-NGNA included: Susan Ball, Kay Cox, Carol Enderlin, Melodee Harris, Kerry Jordan, Tiffany Lofton, Peggy Moody and Janet Rooker. Topics included transitioning from hospital to community, transitional care units, transitioning the person with dementia from home to the nursing home, palliative care in the home, hospice care in the nursing home, health literacy, restless legs syndrome, and obstructive sleep apnea. Janet Rooker, Susan Ball, Carol Enderlin and Kerry Jordan are all members of the NGNA Education/Evidence-based Practice Committee of NGNA, and Melodee Harris is a Director at Large and Fellow of NGNA.

The Arkansas Chapter of NGNA recently partnered with the Arkansas Gerontological Society for a Winter and Spring Conference.  The conference is interdisciplinary.  Carol Enderlin is our education officer.  She is fabulous! This year we had a nursing track at the conference.  We also sponsored students to attend. We also had a booth to reach out and recruit members!

The speakers for this year’s program were:
Jo Charles O'Guinn (ArNGNA Secretary) - CHF.
Carol Enderlin (ArNGNA Education Officer) -  Restless Legs Syndrome.
Peggy Moody (ArNGNA Regional Director) - Palliative Care in the Nursing Home.
Tiffany Lofton (ArNGNA Recruitment Officer) - Health Literacy.
Kay Cox (ArNGNA Co Education Officer) - Hopsice Care at Home.
Kerry Jordan (ArNGNA Webmaster) - Transitional Care Units.
Jan Rooker (ArNGNA Treasurer) - Safe Transitions from the Home to the Hospital
Melodee Harris (ArNGNA President) - Transitions of Care from Home to the Nursing Home.
As you can see, we had very good participation from our members!

Carol Enderlin and Melodee Harris took a course from the Oncology Nursing Society.  They are trainers for programs in Cancer and the Older Adult.  They also partnered with the Little Rock Oncology Nursing Society and presented at a half day program in Little Rock at St. Vincents Infirmery.

In March, Carol Enderlin, Susan Ball, Jan Rooker, and Melodee Harris presented on Sleep and and the Older Adult in Monticello, Arkansas. This is sponsored with ArNGNA and AGEC.

In August, ArNGNA is hosting Debra Conley to have a program for certification.

We already have a program in progress for 2014 in Fayetteville, Arkansas.  This will be a regional program with Oklahoma.  We are working with JoAnn Alderman on this program.  We are hoping to have this conference at the Crystal Briges Museum.  Crystal Bridges is a beautiful museum with artwork from Arkansans donated by Walmart.

We are a small chapter, but we had very good representation at the annual convention.  Carol Enderlin, Jan Rooker, Kerry Jordan, Susan Ball and I were at the 2013 conference.  Carol, Jan, and Riesa Gusewelle, all from ArNGNA, contributed to this article.
