American Delirium Society 4th Annual Conference

Safe Management of Behavioral Disorders in Extended Care
Embassy Suites Baltimore - Inner Harbor and Grand Historic Venue
Baltimore, Maryland

June 2, 2014 8:00am—12:00pm

More than half of nursing facility residents have some form of dementia, many of whom experience behavioral and psychological symptoms, such as delirium. These behaviors, can pose significant challenges for the staff and residents. Over 25% of patients in nursing facilities in the United States receive antipsychotic medications. While these drugs have many legitimate uses, they are often used inappropriately in nursing facilities to treat behavioral disorders associated with dementia. In March 2012, CMS launched a nursing facility quality initiative to decrease the off-label use of antipsychotics.

This workshop will provide attendees with:
  1. an understanding of how and why these drugs have been used to manage behavioral symptoms and the risks associated with their use in older adults,
  2. innovative approaches to managing challenging behaviors,
  3. insight into the current regulatory environment, and
  4. tools for effectively managing behavioral disorders and maintaining a safe environment of care for both residents and staff.
